Chocolate is naturally high in anti-oxidants( Twice as many as found in red wine) which fight harmful free radicals in the body.

Chocolate contains super-protective procyanidin flavonoids and can prevent harmful LDL-cholesterol from becoming oxidised and taken up into artery walls

The British medical Journal have stated that 100g dark chocolate per day could reduce blood pressure by an average of 5.1/1.8mmHg, which is enough to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke by 21%

Eating chocolate makes you feel good. It increases brain levels of several chemicals, including mood-altering PEA , tryptophan - a chemical converted to serotonin in the brain to lift mood and increase euphoria - and theobromine, a stimulant that peps you up

Chocolate is able to quieten coughs almost as well as codeine, thanks to the theobromine it contains

Dark chocolate is particularly rich in magnesium, important for robust brain function. It also contains copper, iron, manganese and zinc for the promotion of cell growth, the repair of tissue and the absorption of nutrients

Chocolate also has a beneficial effect on digestion. Cocoa mass contains around 15% of soluble and non-soluble dietary fibre. This fibre improves intestinal movements and keeps the intestinal and stomach walls clean

We like the fantastic article printed by Good Housekeeping October 2012 as to why you really are better off eating chocolate than not!  These are the highlights:

Harvard University study have found that Kuna Indians have high salt diet but don't develop high blood pressure because of the 5 or 6 cups of cocoa based drink drunk every day. It's the flavanol (antioxidants) in chocolate at work.

Another study showed people who ate dark chocolate for a week saw their blood pressure fall. ( and rise again when they stopped eating it)

Researchers in California found that Chocolate may prevent blood clots forming - in their tests it had the blood thinning properties similar to baby aspirin.

Cambridge university found chocolate lovers were 37% less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease than those who ate very little.

Several studies have shown that eating dark chocolate over several weeks leads to a reduction in 'bad' LDL cholesterol and an increase in protective cholesterol.

Dark chocolate helps keep your blood sugar stable.

And finally ....
Dutch researchers found that those who indulged in chocolate lived on average a year longer than those who didn't. Hurrah.
